Western is a literary genre whose plot is set in the American Old West frontier during the 19th century.

The main characters of this genre are usually cowboys or gunfighters who are armed with revolvers and rifles, as well as ride horses. Furthermore,  also Native Americans, banditos, bounty hunters, outlaws and soldiers are common characters of this genre. The Western literature is known also for the specific clothes that the protagonists wear, including  Stetson hats, bandannas, cowboy boots and buckskins. Considering the setting, Westerns are usually described in places such as deserts, desolate landscapes and mountains.

These stories usually have a common plot such as the construction of a telegraph line on the wild frontier; revenge stories; stories about calvary fighting Native Americans; narratives about lawmen; and outlaw gang plots.

Furthermore, these stories have the purpose to outline the society organised around codes of honour and personal or private justice. These honour codes are usually represented by individuals who look for personal revenge or retribution against someone who wronged them.

Finally, the genre started becoming famous around the early 1960s, due to the popularity of Westerns in television series.
