Winter sports, also known as winter activities, are activities played on ice. These sports include a variation of skiing, sledging and ice skating. Traditionally, these activities were played only in winter. However, with the creation of artificial snow and ice, it has been possible to practice these sports also during other seasons. The most common winter sports are cross-country skiing, snowboarding, Alpine skiing, speed skating, figure skating, skeleton, luge, bobsleigh and snowmobiling.

Cross-country skiing is a form of skiing where skiers move across land covered by snow usually using ski lifts or similar instruments. This sport can be seen also as a recreational activity or means of transportation.

Snowboarding is a winter sport which is part of the Olympics and Paralympics and involves descending a slope covered by snow while standing on a snowboard.

Alpine skiing, also known as downhill skiing, is an activity which consists of sliding down slopes covered by snow with fixed-heel bindings. This sport also is an Olympic game since 1936.

Speed skating is a form of ice skating where competitors race each other in covering a specific distance on skates. This discipline belongs to the Olympic games. Contrarily, figure skating is an activity where individuals perform on figure skates on ice. This sport belongs to the Olympics since 1908.

Skeleton is a winter activity where a person rides a small sledge, known also as skeleton bobsled, down to a frozen track, lying face down and head first. Contrary to bobsleigh and luge, skeleton involves only single riders.

Luge is an activity similar to skeleton where one or two people race supine and feet first. This sport belongs to the Olympic games.

Bobsleigh, known also as bobsled, is a winter sport where teams of two or four people run down an iced track in a sleigh.

Finally, snowmobile, also known as 'motor sledge' or 'snow machine', consists in a motorised vehicle used for both winter travels and recreational activities on snow.
