Virtual reality, also known as VR, is a computer-generated experience which takes place in a simulated environment. Usually, this context is a reproduction of the real world; nevertheless, it can also be fantastical and create an experience which can’t happen in the real world.

Currently, the most used virtual reality tools are the VR headsets which generate images, sounds and sensations that make the users feeling in an imaginary environment. A person who uses VR is able to explore the virtual world, as well as interact with virtual items and features.

VR systems can include also the transmission of vibrations and other sensations to make the VR experience a unique 'adventure'.

The first elements of VR firstly appeared in the 1860s; however, over the years, these technologies have drastically developed. Nowadays, VR is mainly applied to the gaming and cinema sectors. As well as this, VR has been adopted in robotics as to control robots in telepresence and telerobotic systems.

Furthermore, VR relates also to literature. Indeed, there have been several novels that were referencing and describing this concept.
