Large animals veterinarians are practitioners that manage and see to the health of livestock species such as cattle, horses, sheep, goats and pigs.
They are licensed health professionals trained to diagnose and treat illnesses that affect all kinds of livestock. Often, they make calls to farms to visit their patients and their animals, usually in a vehicle that has all the necessary equipment needed to treat an array of animals.
They will conduct health exams, give vaccinations, prescribe medicines for a range of different issues and disorders, take scans such as x-rays and ultrasounds and perform surgeries. Other duties might include monitoring the health of livestock and assisting with problem births.
Working long hours, large animal veterinarians often spend a lot of time on the road travelling from farm to farm. They are frequently on call too in case of emergency, and the workload is in general quite demanding, especially when it comes to restraining and treating much larger animals such as horses and cows. Most large animal vets choose to specialise in certain practices, such as equine, bovine, or porcine.
