Veterinary Medicine deals with the disease, disorder and injury in animals. The scope of veterinary medicine is huge! It covers all animal species, with a wide range of conditions that can affect different species, unlike the study of humans where we all can suffer the same afflictions.
Studying veterinary medicine at university will prove an extremely intense and practical course. From your first week, expect to learn handling and management skills in all the major domestic species of animals, but also with amphibians, reptiles, birds and exotic mammals. In the early years of your degree, you will also have integrated sessions in clinical examination, abdominal palpation, thoracic auscultation, orthopaedic evaluation, neurological examination and echocardiographic.
Over the course of your degree, these skills become central to your mastery of clinical examination of animals, preparing you for an entirely clinic-based final year (most often).
Veterinary science is also empirical in the advancement of human health. The monitoring and control of zoonotic disease (disease transmitted from animals to humans) and things such as food safety are more deeply understood thanks to the veterinary field of study.
Veterinary medicine also concerns itself with the mental health of humans by keeping pets healthy and long living, as it can be extremely stressful having a poorly animal that you cannot communicate with! Ethically, veterinary medicine professionals are deeply concerned with enhancing and upholding animal welfare policies.
Veterinary Nursing also comes under veterinary medicine, where you'll be involved hands-on, caring for a range of animals, providing both emergency and routine health care. You'll work alongside veterinary surgeons to promote animal health and welfare through responsible ownership and play a key role in the education of pet owners.
