Typography is a discipline which focuses on the arrangement of types to make a written language readable, legible and appealing. The arrangement process includes the selection of typefaces, point sizes and line lengths, as well as letter spacing and line spacing.

Typography is the work of typesetters, graphic designers, typographers, art directors, graffiti artists, manga artist and comic book artists. Typography has been a relevant profession until the digital age which has opened the discipline to new generations.

There are different techniques related to typography, which help both with visual aid and graphic design. Spacing and kerning, x-height and vertical proportion, character width, weight, variation and contrasts are the most used techniques and have both an organisational and attractive goal.

Lettering is a discipline which belongs to both graphic design and typography. It refers to the creation of hand-drawn letters which are applied to an object or surface.

This discipline includes both calligraphy and lettering for purposes such as comic books or blueprints. As well as this, decorative lettering can be used for posters, letterheads, advertisements and graffiti.

Traditionally, decorative letterings were created with paints and drawing. Afterwards, with the growth of printing methods and digital typesetting, lettering has started to be originated by computers.
