Translation is defined as a mental activity which permits to render a given linguistic discourse from a language to another. Translation is also defined as a process by which the content of a text is transferred from a source language into a target language. The language that is translated is called source language, whereas the speech being translated to is known as the target language.
There are different types of translations: general translation, legal translation, commercial translation, administrative translation, and literary translation.
General translation is the simplest type of translation and it consists of translating materials which are generic and used in a everyday life. Therefore, there is no need for the translator to know specific terms.
Legal translation is one of the most complicated types as it deals with treaties, contracts and other legal documents. Hence, the translator must know both the politico-legal and socio-cultural context. Usually, specialists in this subject need a professional legal assistance to translate documents perfectly.
Commercial translation, known also as business translation, consists of the interpretation of reports, tender documents, company accounts and correspondences. Therefore, it requires translators who know the business jargon.
Administrative translation refers to the interpretation of managerial texts used in different businesses, corporations and organizations. The majority of administrative translations have a commercial nature. However, not all the commercial translations have administrative features.
Literary translation refers to the translation of literary works such as poems, plays, short stories and novels. Literary translators should explain the humour, feelings and emotions of those works.
The term translation is similar to the term interpretation. The only difference between the two is the medium adopted during the translation process. Indeed, the interpreter translates orally, while a translator interprets written works. Both the actions require that the person involved has a deep knowledge of more than one language.
