Thermodynamics is a branch of physics which focuses on the heat and temperature and how these two aspects are related to energy and work. The behaviour of these quantities is controlled by the four laws of thermodynamics which are explained in terms of microscopic constituents by statistical mechanics. Thermodynamics relate to topics in science and engineering, above all in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and physical engineering.

Furthermore, there are various branches which belong to this discipline, including classical thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, chemical thermodynamics and equilibrium thermodynamics.

As mentioned above, thermodynamics is governed by a set of law, known as laws of thermodynamics which are: the zeroth law of thermodynamics, the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics and the third law of thermodynamics.

The heat is an element that is study by thermodynamics and it can be defined as the energy which is transferred from a system to another as a result of thermal interactions. The amount of this energy transferred in each process is defined as the total amount of transferred heat without considering any macroscopic work.
