The theory of art is the system which aims to understand the essence of art, summarising it in a single key concept. Different are the theories of art which have been developed over the time.
The representational theory focuses on the art as a representation and outlines that the role of art is imitating or displaying the aspects of reality. A common representational art consists of portraying natural items and objects which have the aim of giving the artist’s perspective of the world. Therefore, this representation is very subjective, as every artist has his/her own view of the universe. The representational theory must pay attention to every single aspect of the artwork and understand its distinctive values.
Art can be seen also as an expression, which relates to the artist’s sensations, feelings, moods and emotions, as well as attitudes, evaluations, frustrations and qualities. All of these aspects are shown through a form of art.
Art can be considered also as an organic unity. Hence, every artwork has its own focus and is distinctive for its structure, unicity and form. This unity is seen as the principle which gives cohesion and coherence to artworks, helping the composition being a whole piece of art.
The last theory sees art as creation. This theory perceives the form of art as a combination of elements which existed in nature but not in the same combination. The creative process is considered as an expressive process of the author's subjectivity.
