The term ‘the arts’ refers to the theory and physical manifestation of creativity within human societies and cultures. The main constituents of the arts are literature, performing arts and visual arts.
Literature consists of any written work and can be classified as fiction or non-fiction, and prose or poetry. Literature can be also divided into novels, short stories and dramas, which are the major forms of this discipline.
Performing arts are those forms of art where artists use their bodies, voices and objects to express their feelings and emotions, in front of a live audience. Performing arts include theatre, music, dance and object manipulation and date to prehistoric times.
Visual arts are forms of art such as ceramic, painting, drawing, printmaking, design, photography, videography and filmmaking. As well as this, they contain the so-called 'applied arts' such as industrial design, fashion design, interior design, decorative art and graphic design.
The term ‘art’ has firstly been adopted in the Ancient Greece, where there was not a distinction among the various forms of art. During the Middle age, the word 'art' was associated with the term ‘liberal art’, a discipline taught at university. Then, during the Renaissance period, 'art' started belonging to the humanities and included subjects such as history, linguistics, literature, theology, philosophy and logic.
