The term ‘sustainable agriculture’ refers to the farming process which is done in a sustainable way, meaning that it considers the ecosystem services, as well as the relationships between organisms and the environment.

This discipline is based on four key principles:

  • Incorporate biological and ecological processes into agricultural and food production practices.

  • Use a low amount of non-renewable and unsustainable inputs.

  • Use the farmers' knowledge to productively work the land and promote the self-reliance and sufficiency of the producers.

  • Solve the agricultural and natural resources issues through the collaboration of individuals with different skills.

Sustainable agriculture is a different approach to agriculture. Over the years, different sustainable methodologies have been developed to reduce the natural damages. Two of the main sustainable methodologies adopted in agriculture are the crop rotation and the soil amendment. Both of these techniques are designed to ensure that crops cultivated have the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.

Sustainable agriculture has become a topic of international interest, due to the problems related to the climate change and the growth of the population. In this context, the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change have stated that sustainable agriculture must be considered into national and international policy, as the weather variability and the climate shocks will affect negatively the agricultural productions.
