The term ‘supercomputer’ refers to a computer which has a high level of performance compared to a generic computer. The performance of a normal computer is measured in million instructions per second; instead, the performance of a supercomputer is given by the measurement of floating point operations per second.
Supercomputers are relevant in the field of computational science and are used for different tasks in various areas including weather forecasting, quantum mechanics, oil and gas exploration, climate research and molecular modelling. Additionally, supercomputers have affected the literature sector as many science-fiction writers have started being amazed by this new invention.
Supercomputers were firstly introduced in the 1960s when Sperry Rand built the Livermore Atomic Research Computer. Over the years, different countries have started being interested in the production of supercomputers. The US has been a leader in this field for many years. Then, Japan became relevant between the 1980s and the 1990s.
Various supercomputers are usually designed to achieve special purposes and dedicated to solving unique problems.
