Statistical physics is that branch of physics that uses the probability theory and statistics. As well as this, it adopts mathematical tools to solve physical problems. The discipline is applied to different fields such as biology, neurology, chemistry and sociology. Also, its main aim is to clarify the properties of matter in aggregate.
Statistical physics focus above all on thermodynamics and analyse the thermal energy, by focusing on its particles. Statistical physics is not focused just on a single particle but on the average behaviour of the particles which belongs to a substance.
The mathematical structure of this discipline was established by Josiah Willard Gibbs in 1902; however, two physicists Maxwell and Boltzmann have developed the fundamental principles of statistical physics.
The application of statistical physics has permitted to describe the superconductivity, superfluidity, turbulence and phenomena in solids and plasma. As well as this, it has allowed to develop studies of liquid crystals and build a theory of phase transition and critical phenomena.
