The term society relates to a group of people who interact with other individuals and share the same geographical or social territory. Societies are characterized by social relationships between people who have in common culture and institutions. Furthermore, societies permit individuals to benefit from results they couldn’t have on an individual basis.

Different are the types of societies which have been developed over the years and differ from each other for their subsistence strategies. Sociologists divided societies into three broad categories: pre-industrial societies, industrial societies and post-industrial societies.

Pre-industrial societies are those who based their subsistence on food and animal labour. This category includes sub-societies such as hunting and gathering societies, pastoral societies, horticultural societies, agrarian societies and feudal societies.

Industrial societies are those who developed between the 15th and 16th centuries and focused on Capitalism. These societies relied heavily on the production of goods.

Post-industrial societies are those who have been influenced by the information, services and higher technology more than the production of products.

The term ‘culture’ relates to the social behaviours and norms at the base of human societies. Culture is a core topic in anthropology as it outlines the phenomena which are transmitted through social learning. Culture can be expressed in different forms including the art, music, dance, religion, technologies and ritual.

Considering the humanities, the word 'culture' refers to the level of sophistication an individual has in the arts, sciences, education and manners.
