Welcome to the Kortext ‘social groups’ category. Here, you can find ebooks related to your area of interest, study, or work.
A social group comprises two or more people who share a common identity of some kind. This could be gender, race, religion, social class, or a number of other ideas.
The notion of social groups can be separated from that of social aggregates, a distinction which can help understand the digital materials available in this section. A social aggregate refers to a group of people who are in the same place at the same time, such as a theatre audience.
Social groups can then be divided into at least two types. The first was proposed by Charles Horton Cooley, and is referred to as a ‘primary group’. Primary groups are people who have intimate or close contact with each other, such as families and friends.
The term ‘secondary groups’ was later developed to denote those who interact through more formal settings, or who have legal or working relationships that are more distant.
Ebooks in our collection that relate to social groups relate to issues that face groups such as the LGBTQI+ community, our understanding of gender and its role in society, race, religion, gang culture, nationality, class, male friendships, and many others.
