In linguistic, semantic analysis is a process which relates to syntactic structures, from the level of sentences, phrases and paragraphs to the level of writing as a whole. This analysis consists also of removing features related to a cultural context; therefore, idioms and figurative speech are not considered in the semantic analysis.
The semantic analysis usually starts by focusing on the relationship between single words. Therefore, this process requires an understanding of the lexical hierarchy. As well as this, it concentrates on concepts such as connotation and collocation and the reasons why words are surrounded by other specific terms.
Discourse analysis is an approach to analyse the written, vocal and sign language use. The elements of this analysis are different and include sentences, propositions, speeches and turns-at-talk. Discourse analysis aims at understanding the socio-psychological features of a person rather than the text structure.
Discourse analysis has been considered by different disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, including linguistics, education, sociology, social work, education and cultural studies.
Discourse analysis focuses on different levels of discourse such as sounds, gestures style, syntax and speech acts, as well as genres of discourse and the relations between discourse and the syntactic structure. In addition, it concentrates on the relationships between discourse and context, discourse and power, discourse and interaction, and discourse and memory.
