Science fiction is a literary genre which belongs to speculative fictions. This genre is usually based on imaginative topics such as advanced science and technology, as well as spaceflight, extraterrestrial life and time travel. Science fiction has the purpose to explore the potential consequences of technological and scientific innovations. Therefore, it is usually known as ‘literature of ideas’.

Science fiction has started becoming a relevant genre when the line between myths and facts started being blurred. Traits of science fictions were already emerged in the 2nd century AD, within the work ‘A true story’ by Lucian.

In the 20th century, the genre became relevant due to technological development and its related inventions and innovations. The main works related to this period are the stories by Arthur C. Clark and the ‘Star Trek’ series.

Over the years, science fictions have been used for different purposes. Firstly, they had the purpose to generate a sense of wonder. Secondly, they have been used as a mean of social protests. Thirdly, they had the goal of affirming itself as a serious form of literature.

Science fictions own different features including temporal settings in the future or in alternative histories; spatial settings; the presence of supernatural characters such as aliens, mutants or enhanced humans; the appearance of predicted technologies and undiscovered scientific inventions such as teleportation or time travel; the description of future evolutions of the Earth and other planets; and the outlining of paranormal abilities.
