Romance is a literary genre which belongs to fiction and focuses on relationships and romantic love between two individuals. This genre has different subgenres including historical romance, fantasy, paranormal fiction and science fiction.
There are four elements which a romance novel should have, including the description of the love between a hero and heroine; the outlining of a problem which originates conflict and tension between the protagonists; the description of a love which comes only once in life; the resolution of the problem and reunion of the couple.
Romance novels are usually divided into two subsets: the category romance and the single title romance. The category romance is a novel which is no longer than 55,000 words and whose books are published in specific lines. On the contrary, single title romances are novels which are not published as part of a publisher’s category. Their content is usually no longer than 350-400 pages (100,000-110,000 words).
This type of literary genre dates back to classical Greece, with works such as Chaereas and Callirhoe, Leucippe and Clitophon, Daphnis and Chloe, The Ephesian Tale, and The Ethiopian Tale.
Between the 18th and 19th century, modern romantic novels started becoming popular in societies with the work of Samuel Richardson, Jane Austen as well as Charlotte Bronte. The genre has kept expanding until the late 1980s.
