In the world, there are circa 10,000 distinct religions; however, the main ones are Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. People who don’t recognise any religion are known as atheists and agnostics.
Christianity is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion which focuses on the life and miracles of Jesus of Nazareth. It is the world’s largest religion as 33% of the population worldwide is Christian.
Islam is also an Abrahamic monotheistic religion which supports the existence of one God, Allah, and of a messenger of God, Muhammad. It is the second largest religion in the world and is the fastest growing major belief. People who practise this religion are known as Muslims.
Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world and encompasses a variety of traditions, belief and spiritual practices. People who follow this religion are known as Buddhists and believe in one God, Buddha.
Hinduism is an Indian religion which is practised widely in the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and it is the third largest religion worldwide. Individuals who follow this religion are known as Hindus.
The term belief indicates the state of mind of a person who accepts that something exists or it is true, without a proof.
Originally the term was divided into pistis and doxa. Pistis means trust and confidence, while doxa indicates the opinion and acceptance of events.
