The term emotion refers to any conscious experience which features an intense mental activity and a certain amount of pleasure or displeasure. Emotion is usually related to mood, personality, temperament, motivation and disposition. As well as this, in some theories, cognition is part of emotion.
Emotions have been considered by some theorists as responses to internal and external events which have an effect on the organism. Emotions last usually a few minutes and the set of responses given by the emotive person could include verbal, physiological, neural and behavioural mechanisms.
Emotions differ from other similar constructs considered in the area of affective neuroscience such as feelings, moods and affect. Indeed, feelings are a subjective representation of emotions; moods are affective states that last longer and are less intense than emotions; affect is a term which is used to describe the sum of emotion, feelings and moods.
Klaus Scherer, a professor of psychology and director of the Swiss Centre for Affecrigbbe Sciences in Geneva, has outlined that there are five components in emotion. These aspects are the cognitive appraisal, the bodily symptoms, the action tendencies, the expression and the feelings.
There have been different disciplines that have focused on emotions including human sciences, psychiatry, nursing, psychology and education. As well as this, also economics, criminology and political sciences considered this discipline.
