In psychology, theories are used to understand human thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Psychological theories are characterised by two main features: they must describe a behaviour and they must make predictions about future behaviours.
Over the years, different have been the theories which tried to explain and predict different aspects of human behaviour. Some of them are still accepted today; others, instead have not been analysed by the scientific methods or have been rejected by the current researchers.
There are different types of theories related to psychology including developmental theories, grand theories, mini-theories and emergent theories. However, the most known psychological theories are behavioural theories, cognitive theories, developmental theories, humanistic theories and social psychology theories.
These theories outlined above are usually represented by a psychological school of thought. The first of school of thought, better known as structuralism, was founded by Wilhelm Wundt. Then, over the years, other schools of thought have been developed. The most famous ones are the functionalism, the Gestalt psychology, the behaviourism, the psychoanalysis, the humanistic psychology and the cognitive psychology.
