Interior design is the science and art which enhance the interior of buildings to create more aesthetically pleasing settings for individuals within a space. The person who plans, researches, coordinates and manages these projects is known as the interior designer.
Interior designing includes activities such as the development of the space plan, the site inspection, and different research processes.
The interior design profession has started to be popular in the 20th century and more established after the second world war. From the 1950s, courses on interior design started spreading around the world, and textbooks and content about this discipline increased.
At first, interior design was related to both architecture and other design disciplines. However, in the 1950s with the creation of the National Society of Interior Designer in the US and Interior Decorators and Designer Associations in the UK, the discipline has become a unique profession.
Interior designers do not have to be confused with interior decorators. Interior design focuses on understanding the individuals' behaviours to create functional areas within a building. Decoration instead is the act of furnishing and adorning a space with beautiful objects. As well as this, the interior designer deals with the planning processes and the effective use of a space. Also, he/she has to be highly skilled to develop inner spaces which are functional and safe. These skills go beyond the selections of colours which, nevertheless, are a powerful tool for decorators.
