The term pollution refers to the introduction of contaminants within the natural environment, causing adverse change. Pollution can have the form of the chemical substance as well as energy, noise, light and heat. Pollution is composed of different pollutants which can be either contaminants or foreign substances.
The main form of pollution is air pollution, light pollution, noise pollution, littering, plastic pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, visual pollution, thermal pollution and water pollution.
Pollution is caused by both humans and natural sources. Human-made pollutants come from activities such as combustion, construction, agriculture and mining. Nevertheless, motor vehicle emissions are the main cause of air pollution. Pollution can be caused also by natural disasters: hurricanes cause the contamination of water with sewage, as well as nuclear power plants or oil tankers produce widespread and hazardous releases when accidents happen.
Pollution affects human lives, the environment and worker productivity. Adverse air quality can kill any organisms including humans, as well as cause respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chest pain and congestion.
Pollution has a number of effects also on the environment, including biomagnification, infertile soil, ocean acidification and global warming.
Furthermore, pollution has a negative effect on the productivity of both indoor and outdoor workers.
Pollution control is part of the environmental management processes and controls the emissions and the effluents into the air, soil and water. Without pollution control, the waste produced by heating, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and other human activities would degrade the environment. Pollution control includes several activities such as recycling, reusing, waste minimisation, mitigating, compost and preventing.
