Although the term politics is often used to discuss political science, there is arguably a difference between the two. While politics describes the state of governments and political systems in general, political science relates to the origins of politics in a given place, voting rights, and the study of governmental systems. In short, it is a systematic analysis of politics.
Political theory is then a branch of political science defined by Webster’s dictionary as being concerned with “the ideas of past and present political thinkers and the doctrines and proposals of political movements and groups”. Aristotle is often regarded as the ‘father’ of politics, and many great political theorists have drawn on his works. Their aim is to define, study, critique, and theorise the norms and practices of politics.
Students of political science may be interested in studying areas such as quantitative and qualitative analysis in politics, economic policy, administrative reform, international politics, sustainable economic development, collective memory of democratic processes, and much more.
