A political thriller is a literary genre which belongs to thrillers and outlines a context of a political power difficulty. This genre usually includes a protagonist who has the political power and an antagonist who tries to stop him. This genre considers both international and national political scenarios, and terrorism, political corruption and warfare are common themes. Furthermore, political thriller usually overlaps with the conspiracy thriller.

Before the 1950s, spy novels were the literary books which described political events. The actual political thriller became popular from the early days of the Cold War with the works of Graham Greene and Richard Condon.

In addition to literature, political thrillers started to influence other fields including the film, television and theatre industry.

Legal thriller is a subgenre which belongs to thrillers and crimes and has as protagonists lawyers and their employees. In this genre, the legal system is the main framework.

Among the most important authors of this genre, there are William Bernhards, Michael Connelly and Marcia Clark.

Also, legal thrillers have influenced other fields including the film and video games industry.
