The political theory describes, explains, and studies ideas and trends in political institutions and society. Below, we have outlined a few of relevant political ideologies to help you work out which digital books might be the most relevant to you.
Neoliberalism: critics and theorists often argue over the definition of neoliberalism. However, it is generally accepted that the neoliberalism favours free-market capitalism, and points towards economic growth as the way to human development.
In this ideology, citizens are seen as consumers in a market which, in an ‘ideal’ world, would not be subject to much regulation. It is a controversial theory, in part due to the complexity of its definition and in part due to its role in modern society.
Socialism: socialism is a left-wing political ideology, in which each citizen has the potential to benefit equally from the state’s wealth, under a democratic government. The production, distribution, and ownership of goods are all seen as collective, social responsibilities. State-ownership of services is seen as beneficial.
Libertarianism: this is a collection of political philosophies in which followers believe that the state should refrain from intervening in certain affairs. They feel that government power should be limited to protecting people’s rights and that the freedoms of the individual are vital.
These are just three examples of a wide variety of relevant political theories, other examples include poststructuralism and Marxism. Political philosophers are key to this area of study, and more information on them can be found in our digital library.
