Poetry is a form of literature which adopts the aesthetic and rhythmic aspect of a language to create meaning. This genre of literature uses forms and conventions to have a different interpretation of words or to evoke an emotive response. It uses devices such as alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia and rhyme to achieve musical effects. Additionally, poetry makes use of ambiguity, symbolism and irony to leave multiple interpretations of the texts. Also, it uses metaphors, similes and metonymies to create connections between meanings which were not previously perceived.

Specific poetry types are related to different cultures, genres, and specific poets. Indeed, it is easy to identify poetry works written by Dante or Goethe or Rumi as they have a particular style.

Different are the elements of the poetry: Prosody, meter, rhyme, alliteration and assonance. Prosody is the study of the meter, rhythm, and intonation of a poem. Even if rhythm and meter are strictly related, they differ from each other. Indeed, the meter is the pattern established for a verse. Instead, rhythm is the sound that results from a line of poetry.

Rhyme, alliteration, assonance and consonance are ways to create repetitive elements of sounds. They are usually used to reinforce the rhythmic aspects of a poem or as ornamental elements. Rhyme is the identical or similar sound repetition at the ends of lines or at specific locations within the line. Alliteration is the repetition of letters at the beginning of two or more words immediately succeeding each other. Assonance is the use of similar vowel sounds within a word. Consonance occurs when a consonant sound is repeated throughout a whole sentence.

As well as this, poetry has different forms, which have been changed during the eras. The most popular ones are the sonnet, the shi, the villanelle, the limerick, the tanka, the ode and the ghazal. As well as this, each form has specific structural elements such as stanzas, verses or paragraphs.
