A play is a form of literature written by playwrights. It usually consists of dialogues between characters with the aim of creating a theatrical performance rather than simply reading. Plays can be performed differently; from Broadway to regional theatre, from Off-Broadway to community theatres.

Plays have different genres: comedy, tragedy, historical, musical theatre, theatre of cruelty, and the theatre of absurd.

Comedies are plays created with the aim of laughing. They usually have funny aspects and characters, and they are popular among audiences of different ages. Comedies' origins relate to the Ancient Greek.

Comedies have also subgenres. These are farce, satire and restoration comedy. Farce is a nonsensical genre of play; it is usually overreacted and contains comical humour. Satire is a comedy which has the aim to make people laugh but at the same time create a political or social statement. Restoration comedy is a genre which includes stereotypes and focuses on the relationships between men and women.

The tragedy is a type of play which contains darker topics such as death or disaster. The protagonist of the play usually has a tragic aspect which makes the performance tragic. Tragedy has been created with comedy in Ancient Greece.

Historical plays focus on historical events. They can be both tragedies or comedies, but generally, they are not included in those genres.

Musical theatre is a popular style which has become popular in the American colonies. The plays within this genre contain musical elements which explain the story and make the audience understanding better the plot. The songs usually accompanied by dances.

The theatre of cruelty is a genre which originates in the 1940s by Antonin Artaud. Plays within this genre use abstract elements and focus more on body performances, images, sounds and lighting, instead of the use of languages.

The theatre of the absurd is a genre that usually contains metaphysical elements of existential questions and doubts. This genre denies the rationality and adopts features such as illogical speech and silence.
