Physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy, belongs to the allied health professions which use manual therapy, exercise therapy and electrotherapy to solve impairments and promote mobility and function. The main aim of physiotherapy is to improve the patient’s quality of life through examinations, prognosis and physical intervention.
Physiotherapy is performed by physical therapists also known as physiotherapists.
The discipline includes different specialisations which are sports, neurology, cardiopulmonary, orthopaedics, women’s health and paediatrics.
Physiotherapy can be practised in different settings which range from private-owned physical therapy clinics to offices and health and wellness clinics, as well as hospitals, private homes and research centres.
The origins of this discipline date back to Hippocrates and Galen who are considered as the first practitioners of physiotherapy. Nevertheless, the discipline as a profession has started becoming relevant in 1813, when Per Henrik Ling founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics.
Also, modern physiotherapy has started being relevant from the end of the 19th century due to events which had an effect on global scales.
