Physical chemistry is a branch of chemistry which focuses on the interactions and transformations of materials. This particular branch considers the principles of physics and underlines all the chemical interactions, trying to measure, correlate and outline the quantitative aspects of the reactions.
There are various interrelations that physical chemistry is trying to outlines, including the intermolecular forces that act upon the objects’ physical aspects; the interactions between a body and another, focusing on the concept of heat; the transfer of heat from a chemical system to its surroundings; and the reactions of electrochemical cells.
The term ‘phisical chemistry’ was coined in 1752 by Mikhail Lomonosov. However, the modern physical chemistry evolved from the 1860s to the 1880s due to development in chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and electrolytes in solutions and the publication of the first physical chemistry journal, Zeitschrift für Physikalische Chemie, in 1887.
Finally, further developments in this area have been related to the discoveries in nuclear chemistry and in astrochemistry.
