Philosophy of mind is a branch of philosophy which studies the nature of the human mind. The issue related to the relation between mind and body is a paradigm problem in this discipline; nevertheless, philosophy of mind considers topics such as human consciousness and the nature of different mental states. As well as this, the discipline concentrates on mental events, functions and properties, as well as the nature of thoughts and the idea of mind.
The body-mind problem has been studied by two different schools of thoughts: dualism and monism. Dualism relates predominantly to the Eastern traditions but it has also influenced the Western thoughts during the 17th century with Rene Descartes. Dualists can be substance dualists and property dualists. Substance dualists considered the mind as an independent and unique substance; on the contrary, property dualists see the mind as a group of properties which cannot be reduced to the brain.
Contrary to dualism, monism affirms that mind and body are not two ontologically distinct entities. This view relates to Western philosophers and has become important during the 17th century with the works of Spinoza.
