Depending on how the pest will affect the activities, humans can tolerate the pest or attempt to completely eradicate it.
The origins of pest control are as old as agriculture as also ancient people needed to keep crops free from pests. Chemical pesticides were firstly adopted in 2500 BC when sulphur compounds were used as insecticides.
There are different methodologies to control pests including biological pest control, cultural control, trap cropping, and pesticides.
Biological pest control is a methodology to control pests such as insects and mites by using other organisms. Not only is this methodology related to predation, parasitism and herbivory, but also to the active human management role.
Cultural control or mechanical pest control consists of the use of simple techniques which creates a protective barrier between plants and insects.
Trap crop instead is a crop of a plant which attracts pests permitting to avoid the other crops. Pests which are attracted by a crop are easily controlled using pesticides or other methods.
Finally, pesticides are applied to crops by using agricultural aircraft or tractor-mounted crop sprayers. Before spreading the pesticides is important to choose the right formulation, the best time and the most adequate application methodology.
