The art of painting can be naturalistic such as still life or landscape painting, photographic, abstract, emotive, symbolic or narrative.
The discipline includes three main elements: colour, non-traditional elements and rhythm. Colour is the element of painting which consists of hue, saturation and value. This element is highly subjective so as different painters have their own colour theory. Non-traditional elements are all the items used by painters to practice techniques such as collages. These elements can be sand, cement, fabric, paper and wood. Rhythm is the third element of painting and consists of the distribution of the form in the composition. It is fundamental to understand the whole artwork.
Painting is one of the oldest art forms which has started becoming important with the development of crafting tools among society. This art form has evolved over the years, from the hieroglyphics of ancient society to the Renaissance paintings and Modern artworks.
As well as this, painting includes different techniques such as oil painting, watercolour painting, pastel painting, acrylic painting, sand painting and digital painting. These techniques can be used singularly or together and originate different styles. The most famous ones developed in Western Europe have been modernism, cubism, surrealism, expressionism and impressionism.
