Optical physics, known also as optics, is a branch of physics which studies the property and behaviours of light, including its interaction with objects and the instruments used to detect it. As the light is an electromagnetic wave, it has similar properties to other forms of electromagnetic radiations such as X-rays, radio waves and microwaves. Also, optical physics usually outlines the behaviour of visible, infrared and ultraviolet light.
The discipline origins date back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia where people were using crystal and quartz lenses to study the light.
Optical physics can be divided into classical optics and modern optics. Classical optics is categorized into geometrical optics and physical optics. Geometrical optics analyse the light that travels in straight lines; physical optics considers light as an electromagnetic wave.
Instead, modern optics is the area which focuses on both optical science and engineering and has become popular in the 20th century. This area of optical physics usually relates to the electromagnetic and quantum properties of light.
