Nuclear physics is a branch of physics which focus on the atomic nuclei and their properties and interactions. Nuclear physics is different from atomic physics which is the study of the atom as a whole and its electrons.
Over the years, there have been discoveries in nuclear physic which have been applied to different areas. These discoveries include the nuclear power, nuclear weapons, the magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine, the agricultural isotopes, and the ion implantation in materials engineering.
The origins of this discipline date back to 1896 with the discovery of the radioactivity by Henri Becquerel. Then, one year later, Thompson discovered that the atom had an internal structure.
Scientists who focus on this discipline are known as nuclear scientists. In order to practice this profession, nuclear scientists need to obtain a degree (usually PhD), as well as have a strong knowledge of both math and sciences. Nuclear scientists usually work in academic, government and private industry environments.
