Network security consists of policies and practices which are used to prevent and monitor illegal access, use and modification of a computer network. It also involves the authorisation of access to data in a network which is controlled by the network administrator.

To access to a computer network, users need username and password which after being authenticated, permits them to access to information within their authority.

The authentication process can be different from company to company. There are three main types of authentications: one-factor authentication which requires only username and password to access data;  two-factor authentication which necessitates the verification of a credit card or mobile phone number in addition to username and passwords to enter the network; and three-factor authentication which requires a fingerprint or a retinal scan to access the network's information.

Once the user is identified, a firewall check which services he/she can access.

Networks security can be different depending on different situations. A small business may only require a basic security system, while a big enterprise may need advanced security programs to prevent attacks from hacking and spamming.

Malicious sources can attack networks actively or passively.  An active attack is when an intruder wants to destroy the network’s operations. A passive attack is when an intruder intercepts the data of a network.

There are different types of network security. These are access control, antivirus and antimalware software, application security, behavioural analytics, data loss prevention, email security, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, mobile device security, network segmentation, security information and event management, VPN, and web security.
