The concept of medicine has two basic meanings. Firstly, it refers to the science of healing that means the practice of diagnosing, prevent and treat diseases and promote the health; secondly, it refers to medications, drugs and pills used to treat different illnesses. As well as this, some people can define the discipline as a profession which is focused on the patients' health and which is devoted to their well-being.
The concept of medicine has very ancient roots. Traditionally, the term medicine was associated with an art which had connections to religious and philosophical belief of a culture. With the advent of modern science, the concept has become a combination of art and science.
Nowadays, this discipline is divided into modern and traditional medicine, depending on how the disease is treated. Modern medicine is a fast way to treat illnesses as it tackles diseases as a separate entity from the patient. However, this type of medicine is usually considered unhealthy as it adopts drugs which are toxic to the human body.
On the contrary, traditional medicine consists in treating illnesses without the use of drugs but with homemade remedies which can gradually bring the body back to normalcy. The issues related to this type of medicine is that the treatment dosage can’t be calculated appropriately, which lead to a poor treatment due to an under-dosage or a damage of the body due to an over-dosage.
Medicine is divided into different branches: anatomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, biostatistics, biophysics, cytology, embryology, endocrinology, epidemiology, genetics, histology, microbiology, neuroscience, nutrition, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, radiology and toxicology.
Anatomy is the study of the physical structure of the body; biochemistry is the investigation of chemical components and how they work in the human body; biomechanics investigate the effect of biological systems on individuals; biostatistics is the science that applies statistics to biological field and it is vital for successful medical researches; biophysics is the discipline which uses physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology to understand how the biological system works; cytology is the study of the parts of the cells; embryology is a branch of biology which studies the formation of the organisms; endocrinology is the science focused on hormones and how they impact the human body; epidemiology researches the causes of the distribution of diseases among people; genetics is the study of genes; histology focuses on the organisms' structures by using the microscope; microbiology is the study of microorganisms; neuroscience focuses on the nervous system and the brain; nutrition studies how food and drinks influence the human health; pathology studies the nature of diseases; pharmacology focuses on drugs and medication and how they can help and work on the human body; physiology focuses on the organism life; radiology is the use of radiations to treat and diagnose a disease; finally, toxicology is the study of poisons and their effects on the human body.
