Medical imaging refers to all the processes and techniques of creating visual representations of the internal part of the body. These images are used for clinical analysis and medical intervention. Medical images have the purpose to show internal structures that are usually hidden by skin and bones to diagnose and treat diseases.
Medical imaging is part of biological imaging and includes radiology, radiography, medical ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, endoscopy, tactile imaging, elastography and medical photography.
Over the years, three-dimensional medical images have been developed. These images consist in a combination of different scans which produce a 3D model. 3D ultrasounds are created with a similar technique.
Medical imaging is used also in pharmaceutical clinical trials. In this context, these process takes places if there are these three components: a realistic imaging protocol, an imaging centre responsible for collecting the images, and clinical sites to recruit patients and generate images which are then sent to the centre.
All the medical images are covered by laws of medical privacy to protect the patients’ information.
