The term ‘fiction’ refers to any setting or plot which is generated by the imagination. Originally, the term ‘fiction’ related to any literary narrative including novellas, novels, short stories and plays. Over the year, the genre expanded to fields such as writing, films, TV programmes, live performances and games.

Nevertheless, the traditional literary forms of fictions are short stories, novellas and novels. Firstly, a short story is a piece of prose that focuses on a particular event or more events related to each other. These literary works use both the novels and novellas aspects, but they have a length in between 1,000 and 4,000 words.

Secondly, a novella is a fictional work which is normally written in prose. This genre of fiction is longer than a short story and shorter than a novel (between 7,500 and 40,000 words).

A novel is a long work which belongs to narrative fictions and is usually written in prose and published as a book. This genre dates back to the classical Greece and Rome.

A novelist is an author of novels who also writes other literary genres including both fiction and non-fiction. Novelists come from different backgrounds and social classes, which are elements that usually shape the plot content. As well as this, novelists are used to incorporate their personal experiences into the whole narration and it is not unusual to find the author personality in the protagonist traits. Furthermore, novels can be influenced by the novelist's nationality, gender and sexuality.

Prose writers are those authors who write prose, which is a form of language that outlines the natural flow of speech and grammatical structures, rather than rhythmic structures typical of poetry works.
