With over 3,500 public libraries and 2,000 archive collections in the UK alone, those wishing to pursue a career in the management of archives will learn about both digital and hard copy records. This means that the subject area requires a broad range of skills, including capabilities in areas such as manuscript studies, cataloguing to specific standards, curation, database systems, amongst others.
Archives can be defined as “collections of documents or ‘records’ which have been selected for permanent preservation because of their value”. They have historical significance, documenting activities that occurred, and give an insight into people, cultures, and places.
Archivists not only catalogue collections and evaluate records for preservation, but they also advise users how to access records give talks, maintain computer systems, liaise with donors, negotiate the acquisition of archive materials, and much more.
If you would like to become an archivist, you will most likely need to have studied a relevant subject to degree level. This could be history, languages, or library studies, and you could then work with museums, business, churches, and charities.
