A legal system is a set of procedures or process to understand and enforce a law. Nowadays there are five recognised legal systems, which elaborate on rights and responsibilities in different ways. These systems are civil law, common law, religious law, customary law and mixed legal systems.
The civil law system dates back to the Roman legal tradition. Within this system, all the principles and rights are codified into a code which is the primary source of law. Traditionally, the civil law system consisted of a series of legal ideas derived from the Corpus Juris Civilis. Nowadays, different nations adopt the civil law system which varies from country to country. Nations with civil law systems have legal codes which are understandable and frequently updated.
The common law systems consist of a set of rules which derive from juridical decisions. Common law systems are defined as adversarial, rather than investigatory, with a judge who is moderating between two opposing sides. This type of system is common in the United States.
Customary law systems consist of a set of rules which are created based on spiritual and philosophical traditions. These systems are usually unwritten, created by elders and transmitted through generations. Customary law practices are usually found in mixed legal system jurisdictions, which normally present a mix of civil and common law.
Religious legal systems are a set of rules and principles originated from religious texts and traditions. Nowadays many Islamic nations have adopted these legal systems which are based on the Quran.
Finally, mixed legal systems are those which mix two or more legal systems.
