Teaching a language means making other people speak and understand foreign idioms. Different are the methods adopted by teachers to make students understanding a foreign language.

The direct method of teaching, known also as the natural method, makes use of the learners' native language to teach a foreign language. This method has its own features such as teaching vocabularies through the use of visual objects, teaching grammar by using an inductive approach, focusing on the pronunciation and focusing on question-answer patterns.

The grammar-translation method is a way to teach which has origins from the classical teaching methods of Latin and Greek. It focuses on teaching the grammar rules first to then apply them to translations. This methodology has two purposes: enabling students to translate and read the language and help learners in their general intellectual development.

The audio-lingual methodology is a way to teach a language without using the students’ native language to explain new words and grammar.

The structural approach is a method which considers the language as a set of grammatical rules which students should learn one a time in a precise order.

The communicative language teaching method focuses on enabling learners to communicate in different situations.

Finally, the silent way is a method where teachers do not interact with students forcing them to speak in the foreign language.

Language learning is the process by which a language is acquired by individuals. There are different modalities to learn a new language.

The vocabulary approach is a method that tries to emulate the process of how children engage with a language and it consists of the association of words to pictures and objects.

The grammar method consists of learning grammar first and vocabularies after. Usually, vocabularies are highlighted in the grammar part.

The communicative approach is a way to learn a language in a group with different activities (reading, listening, writing and speaking).

Finally, the immersive method consists of going to a country where the language is spoken and listen and interact with locals.
