There are six skills people should develop to learn and be fluent in a language. These are speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation and memorisation.

Speaking is the act to make vocal sounds. Speaking means to interact, converse and express thoughts and feelings in a spoken language. Speaking skills are all those which permit people to communicate effectively and in a convincing and thoughtful way. As well as this, by having good speaking skills, individuals communicate without being misunderstood.

Listening is the ability to receive and understand messages during the communication process. Listening is key for an effective communication. Indeed, without this skills, messages would be misunderstood and the communication would break down. Listening can be confused with hearing;p however, the process of listening requires more focus and concentration than hearing.

Reading is the cognitive process of understanding symbols to have a meaning. Thanks to the reading process, students identify simple facts within a text, criticise its content and connect the topic with written pages and situations.

Writing is a vital part of the communication process as good writing skills allow individuals to communicate messages through documents, reports, or press releases. Written skills are related also to spelling, grammar and punctuation which are fundamental aspects for the development of good written skills.

Pronunciation is the way a language is spoken. A word can be pronounced in different ways by various individuals and groups depending on factors such as culture, location, social class, ethnic group and education.

Finally, memorisation is defined as a process of committing something to memory and permits individuals to store items in their memory as to recall them later.
