An artist is a person who produces artworks, practices art or demonstrates an art. In modern time, an artist is an individual who practices visual arts only. However, in a business context, the term is associated also with musicians and performers. Nevertheless, the definition of artists can differ from culture to culture.

Nowadays, the term artist is related to a person who can either draw, paint, create sculpture, act, dance, write, make films, take photos or play music. As well as this, an artist is recognised as a person who can create places for human purposes, create unique visions of objects, record and commemorate, give tangible form to the unknown, give tangible form to feelings and make people see the world in other ways.

The word artist was already used in the Middle Age, where it indicated an individual who was able to do a work better than others. In this age, ‘artisanal products’ were more valuable than sculptures and paintings.

Artist monographs are literary works which can be more than a biography as they can include the description of the artist's works, the impact that the artist had on the history and the theories behind his/her artworks.

A monograph is a work which focuses on a single subject, usually a unique author. It is usually published as an essay or book or journal article.
