The term hydrology refers to the study of the movement, distribution and quality of water on the Earth, as well as on other planets. Also, the discipline includes the concepts of the water cycle and water resources.
A person who focuses on this discipline is known as ‘hydrologists’ and works in collaboration with other areas such as environmental science, geology, civil engineering, physical geography and environmental engineering. As well as this, hydrologists use different methods and techniques to analyse and collect data and solve issues related to water such as environmental preservation, water management and natural disasters.
Furthermore, hydrology includes sub-areas including surface water hydrology, groundwater hydrology and marine hydrology.
There are different themes hydrology focuses on. These are the concepts of groundwater infiltration, soil moisture, surface water flow, precipitation and evaporation, prediction, hydrological modelling, hydrological transport and water quality.
The term ‘hydrosphere’ refers to the quantity of water that can be found on, under and above a planet. On the Earth, there are 1,386 million cubic kilometres of water including groundwater lakes, streams and oceans.
The main concept related to the term ‘hydrosphere’ is the water cycle, known also as the hydrologic cycle. It consists of a group of reservoirs which have water and the process by which water is transmitted from one place to another. This process penetrates the whole hydrosphere and extends in the atmosphere and the crust.
