The history of art is a subject which concentrates on objects created by individuals in visual forms with an aesthetic purpose. Visual forms of art include disciplines such as architecture, sculpture, film, photography, painting, graphic art, video art, computer art and animation.

The history of art usually refers to masterpieces which have been produced during each civilisation. As a discipline, the history of art is different from art criticism and the theory of art, because it focuses on historical methods to discover the authentic details of an artwork.

The discipline adopts different methodologies to examine the artworks which include: analysing the artwork in the context of its time; examining the artwork through the analysis of its forms such as lines, shapes, colours and texture; analysing the artwork by focusing on design elements; examining the objects through visual and spatial analysis.

The term 'art styles' refer to the way an artwork looks. Indeed, style is the manner in which the artist represents the object and how he/she expresses his/her vision. An artistic style is determined by different art aspects such as forms, colours and composition, as well as the medium and techniques that the artist uses to create an artwork.

The term ‘design style’ delineates a set of specific colour harmonies and typefaces, which have their own principles and techniques. The most popular design styles are the modern style, the contemporary style, the minimalist style, the industrial style, the mid-century modern style, the Scandinavian style, the traditional style, the transitional style, the French country style, and the Bohemian style.
