The term history indicates a discipline which focuses on the past and which events are recorded in written documents. All the circumstances and events that happened before the written record are known as prehistoric events.

History includes all the information, memories and discoveries of past events. As well as this, the term indicates the discipline which analyses the past occurrences, providing detailed descriptions of the patterns of cause and effects that provoked them.

The discipline concentrates on events that happened over different periods of time. Therefore, historians gave specific names to each period depending on their beginning and end date. There are three significant periods which outlines the history of the world. These are the ancient history, the post-classical era and then modern history.

Ancient history refers to the period of time between the 60,000 BC and the 650 AD. This period ends with the fall of different empires, the Western Roman Empire in the Mediterranean area, the Han Dynasty in China and the Gupta Empire in India.

Within this historical period, there are two important ages: the bronze age and the iron age.

The post-classical era is referred to the Medieval period which begins around 500 CE, after the fall of major civilizations and ends around 1500,  with the invention of the movable-type printing and the voyages of Christopher Columbus.

The modern period covers the human history from the creation of a more global network to the present days. It consists of three periods, the early modern period, the mid-modern period and the contemporary period.

The modern early period starts in 1500 with the launch of the printing press and ends with the beginning of the British Industrialisation. The mid modern period begins in 1750 with the European industrialisation and ends in 1914 with the beginning of the first World War. The contemporary period starts from 1914 and covers the all the present events.
