Hinduism is an Indian religion which is practised in the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and many scholars refer to it with the terms ‘eternal tradition’ or ‘eternal way’. This religion is the world’s third largest religion and more than 1.15 billion people follow this belief.
Even if Hinduism contains a wide range of philosophies, the religion has shared concepts, recognisable rituals, pilgrimage to sacred sites as well as its own texts. Hindu texts are divided into Sruti and Smriti and discuss theology, mythology, philosophy, agamic rituals and other topics. The religion’s main scriptures are the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Agamas.
The main themes of this religion include the four Purusharthas (the goals of individuals life) which are the Dharma (ethics), Kama (desires), Moksha (liberation) and Artha (work). Furthermore, Hinduism has its own practices which include puja (worship) and recitations, family rituals, meditations and pilgrimages. In addition, Hinduism focuses on eternal duties which are honesty, patience, self-restraint, compassion and forbearance.
Finally, the four largest denominations of Hinduism include the Vaishnavism, the Shaivism, the Shaktism and the Smartism.
