Haematology is a branch of medicine which focus on the cause, prognosis, treatment and prevention of diseases which are related to blood. The discipline involves treating diseases that affect the blood production and its components (blood cells, haemoglobin, bone marrow, blood vessels, spleen, platelets and the mechanism of coagulation).
There are different diseases which are related to blood including blood clots, haemophilia, and various bleeding disorders. As well as this, there are also different blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
People who analyse the blood are known as medical technologists or medical laboratory scientists. Nevertheless, physicians who are specialised in haematology are known as haematologists. Their main aim is to take care and treat patients with haematological diseases, although they can also work in a laboratory, analysing blood films and mone marrow slides using a microscope.
Haematologists can specialise in subdisciplines including the treatment of bleeding disorders such as haemophilia, the treatment of haematological malignancies such as leukaemia and lymphoma, the treatment of hemoglobinopathies, and the study of bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.
