Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine which studies the digestive system and its disorders. Physicians who are specialised in this subject are known as gastroenterologists and perform different diagnostic and therapeutical procedures such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and liver biopsy.
Over the past 30 years, gastroenterology has become a very popular medical speciality as a result of the increasing demand for both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
In order to provide accurate services, gastroenterologists should have knowledge of general medicine and be capable of solving common disorders such as indigestion and irritable bowel syndromes. As well as this, these physicians should be able to face highly complex problems such as inflammatory bowel disease, liver failure, viral hepatitis, and complex hepatobiliary disease.
Gastroenterologists usually treat patients in an office or in a hospital, including nursing homes and surgical centres. They should have a minimum of 13 years of education, plus years of training are required to become a professional. Usually, students who want to become gastroenterologists focus on undergraduate programs in biology, chemistry and mathematics. Then, they attend medical schools and a 3-year program of specific studying and training. Finally, in order to get the specialisation in gastroenterology, they enter a gastroenterology fellowship.
